I've seen a few atheists sharing this video, but I don't think this video means what they think it means. I believe that this video is more telling of the dangers of being a nominal Christian, than it is telling of who God is. A.W. Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” This video does not prove that Christianity is an outdated religion. It proves that these people know little about Christianity, The Bible, or God. People who call themselves Christians, but do not devote themselves to really understanding their faith are dangerous.
The Bible was not created for Westerners. Of course it goes against today's norms. Even Jews hated Jesus. Jesus said, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (John 15:18-19)
First, I want to show you the verses that they read (out of context I might add). Context is necessary to interpreting scripture. Secondly, I want to address the comments that are made by people after they realize these quotes are indeed from The Bible.
Addressing The Bible Verses Used
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
1 Timothy 2:11 (New Testament) (ESV) (0:21 seconds) and (0:51 seconds)
This is from a conversation with my friend Delene Weeks, who just wrote a paper on this topic. She is a student at Midwestern Baptist Seminary. This is one of her sources on the Greek translation of the word authority.
“When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity. Deuteronomy 25:11-12 (Old Testament) (ESV) (0:55 seconds)
“But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. Leviticus 26:14-16 (Old Testament) (ESV) (0:44 seconds)
You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. Leviticus 26:29 (Old Testament) (ESV) (0:48 seconds)
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. Leviticus 20:13 (Old Testament) (ESV) (0:58 seconds)
Addressing The Comments
I think the Bible mostly has a lot of positive things in it. (1:47 minutes)
The Bible is a lot less harsh and a bit more peaceful. (1:56 minutes)
Even Jesus said he did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)
The biggest difference is what you just heard here, which is the role of the woman. (1:50 minutes)
Churches can be polarized in believing one way or another. This is why it is important to know your Church's doctrine, and also to know what you believe and why you believe it. The Bible specifies there are things that women should do, and there are things that men should do.
Throughout the Bible, God has valued, pursued, and honored women, in a time period where women were treated as second-class citizens. Jesus pursued the woman at the well, He loved his mother dearly, and He healed the bleeding woman. We are all equally precious to God.
Of course I've heard Bible stories before when I was young, and I went to a Christian college, but I really had no idea that was in there. (2:58 minutes)
